One Church, Many Nations:An Oromo Ministry Finds a Home

Last summer, leaders of Oromo congregations from across the Pacific Southwest District gathered with District leaders to celebrate and share the ways God is at work among their communities. The Oromo people, an ethnic group from East Africa—primarily Ethiopia—bring with them a rich heritage of language, culture, and faith. These vibrant congregations are now firmly rooted in the urban landscapes of Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, bearing witness to God’s work across cultures and cities.
Following that gathering, District leaders learned of a specific need: the Oromo Evangelical Lutheran Church of Phoenix (OELCP) was searching for a new home—a space not only to worship, but also to grow in fellowship and outreach. At the same time, Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Phoenix, located in a diverse neighborhood home to many immigrant communities, had space available. Their campus, featuring a newly renovated sanctuary, chapel, and meeting rooms, became an answer to prayer.
The leaders of Christ the Redeemer welcomed the OELCP congregation with open arms. Today, nearly 100 Oromo adults and children gather each week for worship in the chapel, while the children enjoy fellowship and learning in a nearby family room. Pastor Guyo of OELCP expressed heartfelt gratitude for the partnership: “We are thankful for this central location in a community where many African immigrants live. We hope to continue growing and fill not just the chapel, but the sanctuary.”
This story is a beautiful testament to the power of missional partnerships. Whether among English-speaking or multi-cultural congregations, collaboration is essential for sustaining and expanding gospel ministry. These partnerships can take many forms—shared pastors and ministry workers, merged congregations, or the birth of new ministries from those that have completed their season.
To support such transitions and opportunities, the District has developed “Seasons of Ministry,” a resource that explores practical pathways for congregations discerning their next steps. Through open hearts and hands, God is creating something new in our midst.
The story of OELCP and Christ the Redeemer is one of grace, unity, and mutual mission. May it encourage all of us to look for how God is working—often in unexpected ways—and to embrace the joy of serving together in His name.

Untold thousands are still in darkness, lost like “sheep that have gone astray”. But this is exactly the mission our Lord has created His Church for – reaching the lost for Jesus’ sake in as many ways as necessary. This is the purpose for which our 300 churches and 150 schools were founded in their many contexts. And “the fields are ripe for the harvest” right now!
Your gifts are critical and enable us to continue and expand our shared work together, fulfilling the PSD mission of effectively resourcing congregations and schools for transforming lives and making the Great Commission REAL!
