This year, Christ Lutheran Church and School in La Mesa is celebrating the launch of RootedKids, a newly revamped Sunday Morning Grow Ministry for children ages 3 through 6th grade. What began as a vision from DCE Cheri Selander and Deacon Jake Sitze to make Sunday mornings more engaging for children has blossomed into a dynamic ministry that is bearing incredible fruit. Attendance has tripled compared to the former Sunday School program, as new and returning families from both the preschool and K–8 school come each week filled with excitement and anticipation to be part of the Christ Lutheran community.
Designed with the energy and creativity of Vacation Bible School, RootedKids offers an environment where God’s Word comes to life. Each Sunday, children are welcomed into a gym filled with music, laughter, dancing, and the joyful energy of high school mentors and dedicated volunteers. Bible lessons are paired with hands-on activities that make learning about Jesus interactive and memorable. DCE Selander has made it a goal to include a unique “hook” each week—something fun and surprising that captures the children’s imagination and draws them in. These moments, combined with a consistent rhythm of gathering and teaching, have made RootedKids a highlight of the week for many families.
The ministry’s growth is being shared throughout the school and church community. Updates are shared during weekly chapel services, over the school intercom, and in parent communications, helping families understand that RootedKids is more than just a Sunday program—it’s a place where children experience God’s love in meaningful, lasting ways.
Christ Lutheran’s school theme this year, “Widening Our Welcome” (Romans 15:7), beautifully complements the mission of RootedKids:
“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you—for the glory of God.”
Through this theme, students and families are exploring what it means to live as a Christ-centered community, following Jesus’ example of grace, compassion, and unconditional love. RootedKids provides another avenue for that welcome to be lived out—opening doors and hearts to children and families, helping them see that they belong both at Christ Lutheran and in God’s family.
Already, the ministry has celebrated two baptisms this year—one in the preschool and another in the day school—powerful reminders of how God is working through the church and school to draw families closer to Him. Faith roots are growing deep, and the fruit of this ministry is visible in the joy and connection seen each Sunday.
Christ Lutheran is living out their mission to Gather, Grow, and Live the Way of Jesus. Through RootedKids, that mission is taking tangible shape in the lives of children and families. We thank God for the faithful leaders and volunteers at Christ Lutheran who are helping young disciples grow in their faith, and we look forward to seeing how God continues to bless this vibrant ministry as it widens its welcome and celebrates the gift of being rooted in Him together.

Untold thousands are still in darkness, lost like “sheep that have gone astray”. But this is exactly the mission our Lord has created His Church for – reaching the lost for Jesus’ sake in as many ways as necessary. This is the purpose for which our 300 churches and 150 schools were founded in their many contexts. And “the fields are ripe for the harvest” right now!
