At Christ Lutheran School in Phoenix, God is moving powerfully through the Connections Program, a ministry that supports students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a Christ-centered environment.

The vision began when teacher Ms. Chapman, passionate about serving children with autism, shared her dream with Principal Mr. Doyle: a program where students could receive specialized autism instruction without losing the blessing of a Christian education. His immediate response was, “Let’s do it!” Through prayer and partnership with Gentry Pediatric Behavioral Services, the program launched the following school year—filling a gap that had not been met anywhere else in the Valley. Families no longer had to choose between academic and behavioral support or Christian instruction; at Christ Lutheran, they could finally have both.

From the beginning, the mission has been clear: every child should be known, loved, and supported academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Connections students follow the same curriculum as their peers but in smaller settings with individualized supports such as visual aids, manipulatives, and a strong emphasis on vocabulary and concepts. This structure allows mastery at each student’s pace while keeping them aligned with grade-level expectations. When appropriate, students integrate into general classrooms with added support.

Inclusion has always been intentional and joyful. Connections students join art, music, PE, social-emotional learning, lunch, recess, and chapel alongside classmates. These opportunities foster friendships, authentic interactions, and moments where God’s love shines. General education students learn empathy and patience while discovering the unique gifts of their peers, whether lightning-fast math recall, advanced reading, or creative problem-solving.

The impact has been profound. Students once hesitant to participate in group activities now lead prayers for the school, perform in musicals, and take part in community events. Parents express deep gratitude for a place where their children grow academically and spiritually. Students, too, share their joy. Patrick explains, “The Connections Program helps me do my math, helps me make friends, and it shows people I can do anything!” Sibilla adds, “I love the Connections Program because I get extra help with my reading and math and I love ALL my teachers.”

Another meaningful component is the Adult Work Program, which provides opportunities for adults with autism and other neurodiversities to work in a structured, faith-filled environment. This demonstrates Christ Lutheran’s commitment to serving individuals beyond childhood.

Looking ahead, the school plans to expand the program to 7th and 8th grades, ensuring middle school students continue to receive strong support. A new cohort is also planned for 2026, supported by a fundraising campaign to grow space, staff, and resources.

At its heart, the Connections Program is about connection—students connecting with learning, with peers, with their individuality, and most importantly, with the love of Christ. Each day testifies that God is at work at Christ Lutheran School, creating a place where every child belongs, grows, and is deeply loved.

Enable more stories of transformed lives through Jesus

Untold thousands are still in darkness, lost like “sheep that have gone astray”. But this is exactly the mission our Lord has created His Church for – reaching the lost for Jesus’ sake in as many ways as necessary. This is the purpose for which our 300 churches and 150 schools were founded in their many contexts. And “the fields are ripe for the harvest” right now!

Your gifts are critical and enable us to continue and expand our shared work together, fulfilling the PSD mission of effectively resourcing congregations and schools for transforming lives and making the Great Commission REAL!
