Outdoor Worship Ideas

Below are examples of outdoor worship plans and information sent to us by other PSD churches. If you have ideas for how to do outdoor worship please feel free to share them with us so we can make them available as inspiration to others. Send an email to info@psd-lcms.org to contribute what your church is doing.

From Christ La Mesa, La mesa Ca

Christ, La Mesa has created a webpage and video to announce and give clarity to it's member on what to expect. Check it out here: https://christlamesa.org/outdoor-worship

From Faith Lutheran, Vista CA

At Faith Lutheran in Vista we are providing outdoor worship as well as streaming worship online.  We have selected a space on campus that had built in shade covering for chairs, we are adding picnic tables that have built in umbrellas, and our worship setting over looks a garden with palm trees and plants.  We will continue to offer outdoor worship at the 8am and 1030am service.

From First Lutheran Church, Pasadena CA

We have been outdoor worship since June 7 and our people & staff love it so much that we hadn't even set a move back inside date yet. We roll out a small piano, put up a couple of shade umbrellas, and people bring their lawn chairs.  We keep everyone 6+ feet apart and wear masks.  1/2 hr long including 3 hymns and individual communion by family group.  We call it Worship under the Palms.

From Zion Lutheran, Anaheim CA

I must admit when we received the governor's mandate obligating outside worship  I was discouraged, however along with our worship team be found the option of moving to outside worship not as daunting as I originally thought. I believe the key to our flexibility in this area was coming together as a team and bringing together people so that it was not just one person's issue.

This Sunday, July 19 will be our first attempt at outside worship with our 10:00 am Contemporary Worship service with our praise band accompanying us with guitars and covered and shaded with pop up tents.  Technology is helping as we can push Sunday bulletins from paper to PDF where people can have the bulletin on their phones or other electronic devices.

We are blessed to have a large tree outside the entrance to our sanctuary where most if not all of our congregation will be able to find shade (pop up tents will be available also.) We plan also to include live streaming of this outside worship service for those who are still unable or uncomfortable to attend.

Using Google docs we have been able to establish an RSVP registration link so that members can easily confirm attendance in advance that they are not showing any COVID symptoms.  This system will also allow for quick contact tracing should the need arise.
