The following is a list of resources submitted by congregations in our district who have demonstrated their healthiness by growing in at least one of the identified areas of congregational ministry. The listing is in three forms: a printed resource, an electronic resource, or a person who has been a valued resource. If you have found a resource that was particularly helpful to your congregation’s health and growth, please contact Rev. Larry Bogardus at pastorlarry@stephenslcms.org, or Gary Norton, Regional Mission Facilitator, at gary.norton@psd-lcms.org.

Printed Resources:
- "Mastering the Management Buckets - 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-Profit" by John Pearson. This book is called a "crash course" in leadership skills. The author builds on a Christian platform and views leadership as a spiritual exercise. He addresses many of the unique challenges in a church. Others recommend it for leadership development.
- Seven Leadership Imperatives from a Wild Man by Joseph Robinson Jr. - Seven keys to leadership drawn from the life of John the Baptist and illustrated from contemporary examples.
- Making of a Leader by Robert Clinton - Helpful for lay leadership
development in the church. It includes leadership skill and spiritual
development.
- Charting a Bold Course – Training Leaders for the 21st Century by Andrew Seidel – This is a workbook designed for group study. It helps a participant develop an awareness of God’s work in them and a growing confidence in Him.
- Spiritual Care by Judith Allen Shelly – Intervarsity Press (just expanded)
- Doing Church as a Team by Wayne Cordeiro – Keep your members focused on ministry and working together. There are also helpful leadership insights – for example, the author suggests you structure your organization so that no one is responsible for more than four other leaders under them.
- Contagious Leadership by Bill Hybels – The author says, “The local church is the hope of the world, and its future rests primarily in the hands of its leaders.” This is Hybel’s best work and full of insights to develop and equip leaders. The author’s hope is that men and women with leadership gifts will lead energetically, joyfully, and effectively.
- Building Leaders by Aubrey Malphurs – The author provides a “blueprint” for leadership development defined as “helping established and emerging leaders at every level of ministry to assess and develop their Christian character and to acquire, reinforce, and refine their ministry knowledge and skills”.
- Unlearning Church by Michael Slaughter – Written for those thinking about reaching pre-Christians under 35 years old or as the author states, “third wave churches.” Replication was the first wave, proclamation the second. The third wave is demonstration. “These are churches of contagious faith, living out authentic Biblical community expressed through compassionate service”.
-
Smart Moves for People in Charge by Deep and Sussman – This was written for business but is helpful for church leadership. It offers 130 simple checklists. Two examples are “Fourteen Strategies for Making Better Decisions” and “Thirteen Tactics for Increasing Teamwork”.
