Outdoor Ministry in the PSD - For the first time in well over 50 years the Arrowhead Lutheran Camp will be unable to run a full summer camp program. A group of camp alumni and friends got together early in 2009 to see what could be done.  The result was the formation of the Pacific Southwest District-LCMS Outdoor Ministry team.  This team is dedicated to bringing the message of Jesus Christ to the youth and adults of Southern California and beyond through summer camp ministry and other activities that take place in God's wonderful creation.  We hope to continue the legacy of Arrowhead Lutheran Camp and expand upon the ministry opportunities that have been open to us.

This year we will be sponsoring a week of summer camp from August 2nd-7th using the facilities at Concordia Arrowhead Lutheran Camp.  Space is limited and registrations will be taken on a first come, first served basis.  Please visit the website for the Outdoor Ministry team for more info- www.outdoorministry.org.  Questions can also be sent to info@outdoorministry.org

COOKIE LADY!! Diane Dickey spends a few hours each week shopping, mixing and baking. What is she baking and who is it for? Cookies and a lot of them, 3-6 dozen a week, every week, for various Bible study groups in Vista.  Diane Dickey is pretty much homebound these days, but a thoughtful neighbor makes sure Diane gets to the store so she can get the supplies she needs to do her baking.

After moving from Los Angeles to San Marcos to be near her parents in 1974, a neighbor invited Diane to come to church and that’s when she starting attending Faith Lutheran.  Diane says “I walked through those doors and knew this was the church for me.” “I just love to give, and now that I am pretty much homebound this is my way of giving.” “People that might be alone look forward to the bible classes, and hopefully through these cookies, they know they are thought about”.

Bible study classes are led by Victoria Waufle from Faith Lutheran; classes are held at Rancho Vista Retirement Home, Vista Care and in private homes. Victoria says “not everyone resides at Rancho Vista one man drives all the way from Escondido and is a member of another church.” “It is such a blessing for Diane to share her baking skills with us.  When there is a surplus of cookies they are delivered to several of the homebound or shut-ins.  Right now we minister to a total of 66 people (in retirement homes or nursing facilities), and home bound (still living in their home).  This does not include those who are on the cancer treatment list or those who are temporarily disabled due to operations or severe illness.”

Chris Johnson, who recently met Diane for the first time told me “Diane is truly a happy lady, if it wasn’t for her kindness and enthusiasm I think we would all be a little less fortunate.”  “It seems like some many people I talk to know Diane and the kind person she is, I can’t believe it took me this long to meet her.” Oh, by the way Happy Birthday Diane, 76 years young on June 20th!

The workshop is open to pastors, principals, deaconal ministers and associates in ministry. The registration fee is $200 plus additional costs for meals and lodging. THEOLOGICAL SYMPOSIUM SET FOR SEPT. 22-23—Pastors and theologians tend not to have much formal training in science. Scientists tend not to receive much formal education in theology. Yet the two disciplines are often asked cross-disciplinary questions like: How do our understandings of the creation of the universe jive between science and Christian theology? How do scientific theories such as quantum mechanics point toward or away from God’s creative hand? How should Christians take care of the world’s environment? Are our brains programmed to seek and worship God? How should Christians view new technologies like in vitro fertilization or stem cell research?

In an effort to help pastors and laypeople think through such questions, Concordia Seminary is pleased to announce its 20th Annual Theological Symposium to be held Sept. 22-23 under the title “Science and Theology: New Questions, New Conversations.” While the Symposium will keep its relevance as a time for theological discussion among pastors, this year’s Symposium will also feature opportunities for high school and college science instructors, as well as other laypeople, to talk about the interplay between science and theology.

Following the Symposium, Dr. Victor Raj, mission professor of exegetical theology and assistant director of the Institute for Mission Studies, will present the 2009 Witness Workshop. The Sept. 24-25 workshop will explore “Hybrid Spirituality.” This workshop in four sessions will address the challenge Christians face in their everyday lives and witness as they live and work among people who are looking for the best from everywhere to quench their spiritual thirst. Major issues will be identified and Christian responses will be presented within the Scriptural framework.

Parish pastors, district and synodical officials, Seminary and Concordia University students and faculty and interested laypersons are encouraged to attend. One CEU is available for attending the Symposium. Registration fees are as follows: $130 by Sept. 8 (includes Tuesday evening buffet); $140 after Sept. 8. Day registration: $70 by Sept. 8; $80 after Sept. 8. Session Registration: $35 by Sept. 8; $40 after Sept. 8. Witness Workshop: $35. For more information and/or registration information, contact the Office of Continuing Education and Parish Services at 314.505.7486 or ce@csl.edu, or visit the Seminary’s Web site at www.csl.edu.
