CELEBRATING OUR SCHOOLS

EXCITING MISSION PROJECT - A grandmother or grandfather can never turn away from their grandchild – particularly when the child is in need.  How much more so when the need is a spiritual need!  This year over 40 urban children have found Grantparents who are eager to help them meet the cost of fulfilling their need for a Christian education.

Children at Martin Luther School in Phoenix, Redeemer in South Gate, and the Lutheran Learning Center in Hollywood along with those at South Bay Lutheran High School in Inglewood are provided critical financial help by individuals, groups and congregations who are a part of the Grantparent program of the district.  Can you assist future students in urban areas so that they, too, can go to a Lutheran school?

To learn how you can respond to children in these circumstances, how you can help them spend their days in our Lutheran schools learning to know their Savior, and how you can be a part of this exciting mission project, please contact Rachel Klitzing or Cathy Lenhart at (888) 773-5267, ext. 216, email to rachel.klitzing@psd-lcms.org, or visit our website at www.grantparent.org. To request our new 8-minute Grantparent DVD, please call today!

Licensing Resource for EC Directors in California – The website for the Community Care Licensing Division of California’s Department of Social Services has several assessment tools for early childhood centers.  The tool for directors, outlining common areas of non-compliance during licensing visits, can be found at www.ccld.ca.gov, clicking on Tools and Resources, and following the prompts to Assessment Guide. The assessment tool for parents can also be accessed from the home page, scrolling down to Information for Parents and following the prompts to the guide.  This tool may be helpful to ‘see’ your center with the eyes of a prospective parent.  With the anticipated length of time between ‘regular’ visits now between 5 and  7 years, it is valuable to take a pro-active approach to licensing and compliance.

CELEBRATING HIS PEOPLE - rejoicing together for what the Lord is doing within our Pacific Southwest District family. If you would like to share a PRAISE-worthy announcement within the PSD, submit the info to PSDenews@psd-lcms.org

PARTNERS IN MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS

HYMN COMPETITION WINNER ACKNOWLEDGED —Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, is pleased to announce the 2008 winner in the Pamela Anne Prevallet Memorial Fund Annual Hymn Competition. The competition was created in June 2000 by Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Prevallet in remembrance of their daughter. It serves to foster the creation of new liturgical hymns of the highest caliber for the church. Seminarian Matthew Priem, the winner of the competition, wrote the hymn “What Life Is This.” The winning hymn is available on the Concordia Seminary Web site at www.csl.edu.

Commenting on his hymn, Priem said, “By means of Law and Gospel, I hope to redefine death and life for both singers and hearers and lead them to confident hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ. This theme is ideally associated with Lent, although parts, especially the final verses, may be borrowed for funerals throughout the year.”

The annual hymn competition is open to students of Concordia Seminary who are serving their vicarage as part of their preparation to serve in the pastoral ministry. “It is good to foster hymn writing as a pastoral activity already when pastors are being formed,” commented Dr. James Brauer, professor and chairman of practical theology and dean of the chapel at Concordia Seminary. “It could yield some good, new resources for ministry over the years.” The Pamela Anne Prevallet Memorial Fund at Concordia Seminary holds the copyright to the texts of the winning hymns. The use of these hymns in congregations is encouraged. For more information about the Pamela Anne Prevallet Memorial Fund Annual Hymn Competition or this year’s winning hymn, contact Communications, Concordia Seminary, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, MO 63105; 314-505-7374; or e-mail communications@csl.edu.

REPLACE NEGATIVITY - Youth Groups and Churches can now help their youth (and adults) move from negativity being a knot in their lives to having them say "not in my life!" to negative attitudes and behaviors. Be sure to take a look at www.knotinmylife.com to see how your church can join thousands of people across the country in learning how to replace negativity with a positive Gospel-driven outlook and approach to each day as living witnesses for Jesus Christ!  This easy, yet powerful, program will help youth of all ages impact those around them in a positive way and offers them a very easy and non-threatening way to be a witness for Christ.  "Knot In My Life" was started four years ago by high school youth group members are Faith Lutheran Church in Vista, CA. -- Chris Coletti, Director of Youth & Family Ministry

Grants Available to Lutheran Congregations to Support Sabbatical Experiences for Professional Church Workers

Wheat Ridge Ministries is offering financial assistance to Lutheran congregations that are supporting and encouraging the health and wellness of church leaders by providing sabbatical experiences for pastors and other full-time professional church workers in the congregation. This grant program is being implemented as a pilot project of Wheat Ridge Ministries. Wheat Ridge believes that sabbatical leave for rest and renewal is a significant way that congregations can support professional church worker health and wellness. Ministry sabbaticals can help staff persons stay healthy in the midst of the pressures and complexities of serving others.

Any Lutheran congregation developing a sabbatical plan for a pastor or other church worker within the grant guidelines may apply. The maximum amount per grant is $7,500 per congregation and the congregation must match the grant amount provided. During the pilot phase of this grant, up to ten grants will be available annually and no more than one grant will be provided to a congregation. The grant is to be used specifically for sabbatical experiences for professional church workers. Within these guidelines, funds may be invested in the following ways: salary and benefits for additional staff during the sabbatical period; costs related to assistance provided by a sabbatical interim worker; travel expenses related to the sabbatical experience; education expenses related to the sabbatical experience. The grant may not be used for general congregation operating expenses, purchase of equipment or any other expenses that are unrelated to the sabbatical plan.

Congregations interested in applying for a Wheat Ridge Sabbatical Grant can visit www.wheatridge.org/sabbaticalgrants to review the requirements and determine whether the grant is appropriate for their needs and to download a grant application. Any questions may be referred to the Wheat Ridge office at 800.762.6748. Wheat Ridge is also pleased to provide many other valuable resources for sabbatical rest and renewal through its Ministry Sabbatical Resource Center online at www.wheatridge.org/sabbaticalresourcecenter. The Center is coordinated by the Rev. Timothy Fangmeier, Wheat Ridge Staff Associate, Davidson, North Carolina. For questions regarding the sabbatical process in general or for information about the need for coaching regarding the development of a sabbatical plan, please contact Pastor Fangmeier at tim@giftedpeople.org.
